For RTS games, any of those cards should work. Your 4K video playback would probably make the card work more than an old RTS. By the way, I love old RTS games. :)

I just delete stuff. This is the only part you need:

https://www.amazon.com/XFX-Radeon-1386MHz-Graphics-RX-580P8DFD6/dp/B06Y66K3XD

After that was a string of bullshit that always starts with /ref=. Then a bunch of stuff pertaining to search strings, if the url came from another site, etc. and so forth. It's nothing that needs to be in the link. I don't know why Amazon had to have all of that shit in their URLs by default, probably to do with how their bots process the link or something. (telemetry, etc.)

Oh yeah, here's my graphics card without being renewed:

https://www.amazon.com/MSI-RX-580-ARMOR-4G/dp/B06XZZ93FQ

It's a shame it only has 4 out of 5 stars, it's a really nice card. I tested it when I first got the computer and it played Final Fantasy 15 for Windows on nice settings. I also played through the Windows release of Batman: Arkham Knight on that card. That port of that game was so bad when they first released it that they actually pulled it from Steam to fix it, then re-released it. I saw a bunch of people bitching that their Nvidia cards were having trouble with both FF15 and Arkham Knight, but that RX 580 handled both like a champ.

So, yeah, I can definitely recommend that chipset from AMD, but I just don't know about 4K video. Both my TV and computer monitor are 1080p.

Yeah the 4k was a defacto now. I just want to run at 1to 1 and well as it has it lol. So only real reason I am getting a new one is I want that HDR and 4k output ability. That is if I even use it. Also the tv has freesync, sadly not th new one. Though I have hear nvidia has cards now using it, or was suppose to.

Stars is gamers, there is a 8gig card of the 580 so some will mark it down. I think the 570 does this too a 4gig and 8 gig version. I do not think i would need the latter as I do not play games needing it, least do not plan to on the tv, but seems a lot of people are into doing that.

Anyhow it looks like a 570 might be in my perview as they range in the 120~160usd where a 550 is more in the 110~150, sounds really dumb. Only real benefit of the lower class card is power usage. But I guess going from a tv from 2006 to one from 2019 should make a massive difference.

I kinda had a change in mid of the wall mount as I really do not need a expanding from the wall thing just to access usb and hdmi ports, not like I will pivot the tv left or right much for any reason. So I might laze out and use the old one rated for 300lbs lol. It literately is a 30lb chunk of steel bolted to the house. And I just really do not trust the default legs at all one something this big. 58X32 roughly.

That sapphire card kinda calls to me it is 112usd at newegg. The media pc is already ugly so what will a bleah wtf backplate do for it that is any worse than the bodgy 2003 era clear plexi case doesn't uglify already. lol I do need to find a case ort make something some day.  Oh I guess that is a detractor is a 550 is usualy small and shorter than the itx mobo. . . . . anyhow we will see.

So, the fucknuts at Amazon sent me hanging file folders instead of a Ryzen 5 processor. How the hell do you confuse the two?

MadKoifish

wait in a search or actual delivery???

scifidude79

I have the file folders sitting right here. I have to take them to Kohl's so that they can be returned to Amazon, then I have to wait to get my actual processor.

MadKoifish

Oh god, some expensive folders. Happens when you have just numbers on boxes with no pricing to stop theft at warehouse etc. Guy just pulls numbered items down. Just have one guy just too tired or uncaring to verify numbers. . . . and file folders! Though I doubt that as I would think they would have barcodes or a Qcode thing to scan in etc. so yeah damn.

They are probably just desperate to ship some of those.

scifidude79

The other possibility is that someone else went to open their box with the folders only to find my Ryzen 5 2600 inside. Either way, I'm pissed. Tonight was the night I was going to upgrade this beast from the FX-8120 to that Ryzen. But, now it's not happening, unless I pull the Ryzen out of my gaming rig. It's the exact same processor. I have everything else I need to put the computer together.

I'm sorry, my friend.  That's too bad.  I hope you get it soon!

Thanks Eric. I still may pull the processor out of my gaming rig. It's the same model of processor. I'd rather have my daily use computer all upgraded than have the gaming rig working. I can always game on a console or my Pi.

Since this is the first time this particular issue has happened in the seven years I've had that Amazon account and issues are few and far between, I'm willing to overlook this, provided there aren't any issues with the return. I've already dropped the package off at Kohl's, so it's on its way. I just hope they send out my processor tomorrow.

Well, that took longer and was more of a chore than expected. I wound up cannibalizing more of the gaming rig than I thought I would. It turns out, the power supply I had for my old desktop wasn't such a good fit for this setup. The issue is the connector for the CPU. The PSU I was trying to put in there has two connectors, an 8 pin and an older 4 pin. The 8 pin is higher up on the cable, so it doesn't reach as far. I couldn't reach the CPU plug with the 8 pin connector, which is what I need. So, I grabbed the power supply out of the gaming rig. While I was at it, I snagged the RAM too, I can always get more for the gaming rig. So, I have 32GB DDR4 in my desktop. I presently have 5 120mm fans in the case. Two in front, two up top and one in back. Then there's also the CPU fan, PSU fan and two graphics card fans, and this thing still hardly makes any noise. Even doing a CGI render isn't making the fans start being loud, like they were on that FX-8120.

The other thing that took a while was routing my cables through the side of the case. I thought I was going to not be able to reach the front audio connector, but it wound up working OK after I routed the cable down around my power supply.

Here are a couple test renders I did just to see how it was doing. I've only rendered in Lightwave with this processor before, not Blender. The full ship shots were taking about 15 minutes with the FX-8120, this one took just over 5 minutes. The closeup on the engineering hull was over 7 minutes, that same render took closer to 20 minutes with the old setup.

Cool sucks it crippled your plans though. Gonna need to get a new psu for one of the machines I am guessing. Something I need to recheck on my media pc is if the psu has that 8pin gpu line. I think it might only have the 2 6pins on it. YUCK. Do not want another psu in the house. Have one cannibalized for a fake car battery for old stereos and testing amps but I have heard of guys hacking them for the higher end battery chargers but since lipo life it isnt as huge of a thing to zap packs with high voltage. The render times sound great. I need 32gigs keep running out every 15min. Prices kinda still suck for ram.

Lucky whom ever got the cpu if that is the case. wonder if they will honor up? Likely will as it is probably some person who wouldnt have a clue what a ryzen is let alone how to use it. I mean hanging file folders. . . .

TV is arriving tomorrow afternoon that will be fun. Just 55lbs, but in a weird shape. Curious to see how it will meld with the phones as it has that samsung connected things stuff. Hear the note10+ pen works on the tvs too but I will have to see. Be nice if I can slave a old phone or tablet as a remote. Hoping that ARC or whatever it is allows the tv to control the hdmi vol.

scifidude79

I was shopping new PSUs. Then I decided to do a search, and it turns out they do make these:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K842JQ2

So, I ordered those. If I can just add an extension to the older PSU and make the 8 pin connector "stretch" to where I need it to go, problem solved. Though, I do need to switch them back because only one has an 8 pin PCI-E connector, which is what that Radeon card needs.

Funny you mention RAM prices, that 2x 8GB kit I ordered last week went up $10. I'm glad I ordered when I did. I found an 8GB stick of DDR4 at 2400 MHz that I can use for the gaming rig until I get something better. It came out of that computer when I replaced the mobo, CPU and RAM a few months ago.

I don't know if anyone got that CPU, or if someone at the warehouse just messed up and sent the wrong item. The replacement is due tomorrow. As long as that's correct and they don't try any shit like claiming they sent me the CPU in the first place instead of the file folders, we're cool. Otherwise, I'm going to have to rethink buying from Amazon in the future.

It's cool that your TV will be arriving. It's also cool how light today's big flat screens are. What do you mean by weird shape? Is it one of those curved deals?

scifieric

Nice work all around, Chris.  It sounds like your rig is enviable!  I'm glad the rendering is faster for you now.  Excellent.
3DSciFi.com  Welcome!

MadKoifish

Its just a flat bit of 58X32 vs say a 55lb box. Easier to pick up that box.

OPhh man you can tell I was beat last night, totally forgot about extensions! The lol of those is they are mostly for people with Ketchup and mustard cables to hide the originals behind the case wall. I have a few on old cases for the mobo power leads I have a few that are super stiff and stress the plugs. Extensions are super soft, least the ones I got. Raidmax I think from (CRY) Frys as they were on discount.
