Title: The Practical Cosmo Tiger II
Post by: Angry White Woman on Aug 12, 2019, 09:06 pm
So I've always had a love for the Cosmo Tiger II from Space Battleship Yamato verse (called the Astrofighter in "Starblazers"). I do love the original design and I'm not one to model outside of my original universe but this is something I've been playing with on and off for a while.

I wanted to re-design the aerospacecraft using more "believable" engineering principles and aerodynamics to present a more realistic take on the classic design.I'll post more on it with the next update but the most notable design changes from the original are the addition of the canards and wing nacelles.

The canards will make this craft vastly more maneuverable in an atmosphere and the nacelles house braking engines and hi-power boosters. This version also adds air breathing turbojets (the intakes are doors that replace the transparent "sensor blister" on the original) in addition to the Axial Flow "Cosmo Engines" which I'm just gonna call fusion engines as the "zero point" energy wave motion propulsion system of the genre's capitol ships is too sophisticated to scale down to a fighter.

The wings on the original were just too small insofar as surface area to generate aerodynamic lift adequate enough for practical atmospheric flight so I lengthened the wings.

It's FAR from done..not even remotely and this teaser is just a quick render with no texture setup just to preview this project.

(The AIM-9 sidewinders on the wingtips are just place holders for effect until I design a more advanced version)

The markings pictured are for SVFA-284, number 200 CAG bird of The Jolly Roger's a US NAVY CTII squadron detached to the UNCN Fighter Command and deployed to the UNSS Argo.

Can you see the orthos I posted? Im wondering if the attachments are working. They're all saying no views.

I think that bit of the forum is broke. I had looked at each multiple times already.

Loving the aft hunch back to the area behind the cockpit. Not to mention the thruster pods. I was a bit surprised in 2199 in how little they changed these from the original 74 show. I had always as a kid wondered wtf those grill shouldered things were. lol.

Comparo of the original to 2199 version

and yeah if I had read the original info way back in the 80s right any ship with cosmo was suppose to carry a flight drive based on the alien tech that crashed on mars. (or moon?) So a simplified cosmo drive.

Cosmo Zero was always my fave, though 2199 got my attention with the Falcon redesign. I keep meaning to pick up a few of these in the smaller scales.

That's a really nice design and even better model.

Thanks MK! That hump in the back is basically the housing area for the fusion engines. because this design also has air breathers that are staged coupled to the fusion drives the airframe needed a little more room for the mechanics of it all as well as an APU.

I too thought the Cosmo Falcon 2199 was a vast improvement over the original. I may do a bit of a redesign on that one eventually but not sure yet as for a heavy space fighter the design is actually fairly practical.

Oh nice! Love it!
They went with a bit of a hunchback/curve on the show fighter.. and sadly no 1/72 kit of it, but there is a non scale available.. yay!

Been obsessing over details...starting fleshing out the cockpit...just a lighting test because I wanted to see it lit up but obviously far from finished. The cockpit is as realistic as possible. All the switches, dials and buttons are labeled with real-world functions.

I'm using a lot from the FA-18F Superhornet among other aircraft as sort of my source reference material.

The generic PFD at the top is a placeholder until I make an original..it's from a Boeing 737-800 lol.

HAH, that is something you'd have to know from exp. Sat in a f16 ages ago and it was all acronyms for everything but your basic functions and that was a old analog everything interior. Add in all the new modular digital displays and lol.

Well I think 13 years as a professional pilot and former F-14 mechanic in the US Navy gives me a little head start over your average run of the mill artist. Knowing the common acronyms used in aviation control systems for aircraft makes it an easier job. I do have to look up one or two items associated with the Tactical systems on the panel guides I'm using so I can decide if I want the system on my design or not.

The bigger challenge is the fact that this is also a spacecraft and has additional systems associated with spaceflight operations. Figuring out where to put everything on the panel gives me an appreciation for real aviation engineers.

Yup I remember you mentioning it hence the comment I made. And yes, I tried to look at everything on a STS once for that TOS shuttle as well and it would just have take up so much space. And the shuttle is wall to wall almost, or was.

I think I might have somewhere a internal graphic of the 2199 ship. I think they fully modeled it out for the show. How accurate it is I do not know.  I do remember it being a seat shaped display array. It'll take me a while to find and flip through the book files.

That's a really nice looking cockpit so far. :)

That's cool that you worked on F-14s in the Navy, I've always liked the F-14.

Agreed and agreed!  Very cool in both respects!

here ya go tech geeks...

A close up of some panels so you can read the labels and ask questions?

LOL, no idea a parking brake would draw laughs! Who knew!!

Hey MK! Check this out dude!

https://www.nasa.gov/centers/johnson/pdf/390651main_shuttle_crew_operations_manual.pdf

The Shuttle was something else...The level of systems control was insane. I read somewhere a while ago by Mike Massimino I think who said that 90% of the switches on the Shuttle consoles were all but forbidden to be used by the flight crew. Most of the "switchology" was pre-selected by the ground test crew specific for the mission parameters. Flipping through that manual I can see why.

It's practical, but you never expect to see it on a spaceship!
Title: Re: The Practical Cosmo Tiger II
Post by: Angry White Woman on Sep 08, 2019, 12:32 am
Well the Cosmo Tiger II is less of a spaceship ( I hate that word by the way - it's too retro - Buck Rogers like - I prefer spacecraft!) and more of an aerospacecraft. It needs a runway to take off and land and it's carrier based as well. Thus, you don't want it rolling away when you park it!

Latest update! I'm damn near finished with the front cockpit panel. I finished the left and right AUX panels. I tweaked the PFD display and found a better place filer for the tactical MFD top center. I have to tweak a couple things but it's coming along!

OK here are the images I mentioned sadly it is the FALCON not the tiger II. I could swear I saw animation of one in 2199 but it seems they only appear in 2202 and I do not have those books.

Though it appears your further along to the point any refs are moot anyhow >_> But guess they could be useful for anyone wanting to make a Falcon. >_> Likely wont use that site anymore took ages to upload as multi image is broken and navigating the menus to make a gallery put images into it sort em and then find a link to post of the gallery is insane now.

Those were actually awesome! TY!
