Title: Scifieric's 2019 USS Enterprise
Post by: scifieric on Oct 09, 2019, 12:00 am
Well, as some of you know, my tutorial Enterprise was lost in a hard drive crash.  So, I'm going to build an even more accurate model (accurate to the 11 foot filming model), if I can.  I know it doesn't look like much, but here's a start.  And I don't have as much time to devote to this as I would like.

And yes, there's a very specific reason why I haven't cut in any windows yet.  Plus, I may have to remake the neck, I'm not sure yet.  I have to do some more research.

It looks great, bro.

It looks like a lot to me. That teardrop alone takes a while to do. Plus, if you're going for super accuracy, then you're continuously checking references, which slows things down.

Yep, I tried two different methods for the BC Deck.  I still have to go back and flatten out the back of the "drop" a little more.

I appreciate the encouragement.  And I am checking references ... a lot!

I had to do the very back of my teardrop more than once, then there was still some fiddling with it before I finalized the Sub D. Then there were the inevitable renders to look for errors. So, yeah, it's not really a part you can rush.

Looks like your off to a great start with this.

Even with the Tut you posted on the YouTube, that B/C deck is a pain in the arse to get right.

A little more progress.  No textures, just materials to make renders a little easier to see.

Didn't really have any time to work on this much last night or today, so I only put in some placeholders for warp engines, warp pylons, and the shuttlebay doors.  But, small progress is still progress.

Oddly, even though I've been thinking throughout the week about how much I wanted to work on the model, when the weekend got here (I've been on call all week) I was too tired!

But, I changed the angulation and placement of the pylons and changed the positioning of the temporary warp engines.  I did a couple of quick test renders to see how they compared with screen captures, even though I have no idea about the camera type nor the lenses used in the original series.  Anyway, I figure they're close enough to warrant continuing.  But, I'm open to opinions.

Really tired today, but still managed to get a little work done.

I tried a slightly different method for the "arms" on the Engineering hull.  And those with a sharp eye may notice something about this model that I've always wanted to do, but never did before.
Title: Re: Scifieric's 2019 USS Enterprise
Post by: scifidude79 on Oct 26, 2019, 10:17 pm
That looks great. What was your different method for doing the "arms?" I like that you're doing the pilot deflector dish and bussards too. Are you going to give that one the taller bridge too?

Thank you, Chris!

I still use the proto arms to cut most of the flat area, but I also used a small section of the arm to cut into the front section of the hull.  It gives me a sharp demarcation and should make it easier for me to texture.

And yes, I will be making both pilot versions, the production version, and wrap it up with a The Trouble with Tribbles version!  Including the various bridge sections!

Yeah, this is something that I've wanted to do since I made my first ship in Truespace.  I had the idea ... AFTER I built the model.  I realized that it would have been easier if I built the ship and THEN cut in all the windows and such.  That way I could make any version I wanted.  So, I'm doing that this time.  I'll make all the parts, then save a base version and then start laying out windows, ports, and such.  Then I'll texture.

I usually like to texture as I go, but this is the exception to the rule.  I may even texture before laying in the final details.  Hm.  I have an idea.

I used to do the pilot version(s) when I did a model, but I don't do that anymore. It's definitely easier to plan that as you go, especially before you do the windows.

Sometimes I want to break from my plan of modeling everything first and just go right into finishing some version of this model.

So, to tamp down that urge, I make the occasional render.  I've always wanted to make 2nd pilot model renders.

The materials are just temporary.  The second pilot Enterprise actually had a reddish hue of paint on the warp domes AND the deflector dish.  So, for accuracy's sake, I'll probably do that.  However, since I'm making multiple versions this time, perhaps I'll make an "idealized" version as well.

Did a VERY small amount of work tonight.  Just feeling plain tired.

These are simple test renders to see if I'm on the right track.  I think (for the first time) I may have the warp engines near the right place.

One render is for the early production version of the ship.  I hadn't realized that they only made the opening titles AFTER they had the lights in for the production model.

I didn't think there was any. For one thing, all but one shot was done with the 33" model. While it was never built for production use, they had to use it due to the 11' not being done.

Correct, with one exception.  The intro shot with the Enterprise entering the frame from the left and the camera is below, then swings up to the bridge.  That one shot was the only one done with the 11 foot model for the first pilot.

Looking at my last render gave me an idea.  I subtlety changed the placement of both the lower running lights and the two groups of three again.  They should rest in the center of that lower lip.  So, even if my overall shape isn't correct, at least I've got the lights placed a little better, at least I think so.

Yeah, the change is really subtle.  If you have both images up at the same time and switch between one and the other, you'll see the lights jump a little bit.  That's the "big" change.

First image shows the planetary sensor and nav deflector. :P

Seriously, everything is looking great. I take it the nav deflector and warp domes are the same material.

Yes.  And it was almost a mottled reddish, brownish, copper.  I'll be making a proper texture for it later.

Okay.  New Engineering section "arms".  Someone pointed out a couple of things on my wire frames over on the Trek BBS.  So, I've added a 12 degree curve to the back of the "scooped" out section of the arms.

This also gives a closer-to-the-original curved end to the "scooped" out section of the arms.  It's a lot rounder this way and less triangular.

I'm fairly satisfied that a 12 degree curve is close to the original.

Forgive the lack of fantail yet, I have to cut that out later.

Starting on the first pilot textures.  And for a change of pace, I figured I'd start on the bridge area.  There is only one true texture on this so far, that's the blue/green with dirt hull.  Everything else, including signage, is all modeled ... at least thus far.

The true shape of which engineering section? Jefferies' original drawings? His revised drawings? The 33-inch shape? or the 11-foot shape? Because, they're all different. ;)

I was just wondering which of the shapes you were discussing. For my own models, I like to go with whatever looks closest to what was seen on screen the most, which is the 11" model, of course. But, it is interesting to note the differences. Jefferies' original design is cool, but the swell on the bottom was harder to do on a lathe when the 33" model was made.

I was feeling kind of down today.  Slept a large part of the day away.  I am still recovering from a cold, so that's probably the reason.  That, and I've been thinking about my departed pets.  So, I did something that always brings me some happiness.  This shot from near the end of the original Star Trek series episode "Metamorphosis" is one of my favorites.  I keep trying to make my Blender 3D model look more like the original.

I found that my animation for my warp lights is gone in this scene, so they are all lit.

I've got to finish my latest project.  I want to get my model looking more like the original.

Thanks for looking in.

What did you do to the camera?  Change focal length or ISO?

For this particular image, I changed the sensor size to 16 and the Focal Length to 50.  I think it gets closer to matching how the model looks in the photograph I was trying to mimic.  But it only was about making the model look correct.  The first version of this that I did made the warp engines look entirely too long.

Also, when the time comes and I make a serious attempt to duplicate the original photograph, I'll want to change the color management settings as well as the lighting.  Not to mention that the model isn't finished yet.  But, small steps first.

A little tiny bit of progress.

Made some changes to my temporary textures and added more of the windows and ports.  The spires on the warp domes are now gold.  The "glass" textures no longer makes those fireflies.  It's a mix of transparent and metal.

The angles I selected where based off of pictures taken by the original effects crew when they got the 11 foot model, and an image from the second pilot.  I should get to the banners today on the Engineering Hull and perhaps the warp engines.  Then I hope I can start to texture.

Excellent question.  I haven't decided yet, which is why I stopped there.  I was thinking about cutting them in this time.  If I do, it would help with texturing.  If I don't, it's easier to swap out the lettering for another ship.

How easy it is to swap names and registries with textures depends on how you make your textures. I make mine in Inkscape, and it's simple to change names and numbers. Then I just have to save the texture as another name and apply it to the model. Though, most vector graphics drawing programs would make it easy.

It feels like a lot of work for only a little progress.

I do think I have pretty close to the final settings for my textures.  The bridge is textured, all the rest are materials.

Ignore the neck, I'm still adjusting the colors and material settings.  I'll have more control over the final result when I actually texture the thing.  This shot is to imitate one of the publicity shots of the 11 foot model of the Enterprise after it was delivered by Datin's team.  I'm starting to get fairly happy with it.

And another homage to yet another first pilot 11 foot Enterprise publicity shot.  Not quite there, but getting closer.

It's true, though. We all know it. You can work on a mesh for hours and know you fixed a lot of issues that it had. But, then you render and your results are only seemingly marginally improved over your previous renders. But, you know it's better, even if others can't see it.

You are quite correct.  I'm certain that we've all experienced that.

I actually was working on a problem on the Enterprise last week ... and inadvertently deleted QUITE a few verts that I didn't mean to touch.  I didn't realize it until after I had saved the mesh a few times ... so I had to fix it.  That was a lot of fun, I can tell you.

I still have to work on the Impulse Engines (obviously), the markings on the upper saucer, markings and lights on the back of the lower saucer, the signs on the bottom of the Engineering hull, and I think I still need to include the markings on the bottom of the Warp Engines, but I'll have to research that to be sure.

Thanks for looking in!

I KNEW there was something wrong when I was posting the last set of images.  I was simply too tired last night and didn't notice the incorrect yellow marking on the rear of the BC deck.  Sorry.

I know I'm not there yet, but getting closer by the hour!  The signage is done, except for the numbers on the port side.  That should be easy enough.

I still have to work on the Impulse Engines and the "lights" in back of the shuttle bay.  But all the rest of the markings are done.

This is an imitation of the only shot done with the 11 foot model of the Enterprise in the first pilot that was reused in so many episodes, including the second pilot, The Corbomite Maneuver, Charlie X, and others.  I haven't set the lighting, nor is anything other than the bridge textured yet, but this helps give me an idea if I'm on the right track.  I think so.

Thank you, Chris!

The pilot shots were used in every episode.  The 3 footer was the Enterprise as it whizzed by the camera during the credits!  I want every version and I've always told myself I'd make them all, but I never did it.  Time to correct that because, well, I'm not getting any younger!

I'm tired and I'm going to get some sleep.  Later today, I'll duplicate the markings on the port side.  I'll also thin those rear end-cap warp details.  I think they are too wide.

Forgive the render from the aft port side.  The only times we ever saw something even close to this angle were:

1) The three foot model at the end of The Cage.
2) The shot of the Enterprise as it fired on Lazarus' ship at the end of The Alternative Factor.

After I take care of those two minor details, I'll get started on the texturing.

For sure. For one thing, how many episodes ended with the shot of the ship flying away from the camera from Where No Man Has Gone Before? A lot. Even if the didn't end with that shot, a lot of them still used it.

Did a little texturing on the Navigational Deflector / Main Sensor Dish (big dish in front of the Engineering hull) tonight.  Last night I came up with my own version of a "glass" shader.  It is being used on the bridge dome (upper planetary array), the lower saucer dome (lower planetary array), and the "lit" dome above the shuttle bay.  Some may not be aware that the first pilot for Star Trek (The Cage) had no internal lighting at all for the models!

Some people who are paying attention have pointed out some things that I had on this model that technically didn't appear until later.  I think I got most of them, but there may be more.  If you spot something "wrong", please point it out to me.

I hope to accomplish a little more day-by-day.

Let me know what you think.

Thank you, Chris!  The warp domes were fairly quick.  But the deflector, I spent some serious time on that yesterday.  I wound up using my own texture and a principled shader to get CLOSE to what I wanted.  I figure, this will do for now.

I know I keep showing you guys the same angles but with minor changes.  Sorry about that.  Bridge, BC Deck, saucer section (top and bottom) and Engineering hull are all textured.  The neck is a material because I'm still not exactly sure what I want to do with it.

But still, progress.

every now and then when he comes in for work he sees i have some page here open ... and he will get a funny look on his face " what episode is that from ". I have explained CG and 3D modelling but, he just likes to look at the pictures.

he always wonders how you get such clean shots of the TV screen. LOL

he loves everything ST, no exceptions. he buys a x-mass ornament every year like 50 or 60$ thing.

Interesting. Actual modeled stars or just a procedural environment? I use a procedural in Lightwave, or I just throw an image of stars I make in GIMP in the background. Depends on my needs. :)

Modeled stars.  As a matter of fact, they do not even give off light.  My camera has it's own child point light.  This way, stars appear and disappear rather like the original series.  For other uses, like trying to look like a "real" starscape, then emissive points and considerably fewer stars.

That's cool stuff. :)

I grabbed a shot from the Roddenberry Vault blu ray set.  It was a picture of the 11 foot Enterprise being filmed.  I made the background entirely black, and cropped out the guy who was crouching below the model and I turned it into one of my rotating desktop backgrounds.

I asked my wife how she liked that one shot and she asked if it was one of mine.  I laughed and told her that it was the real thing from back in the day.  She peered at it hard, then said, "It looks like one of yours." and she walked away.  So, I've tried to make a similar image with my old USS Enterprise.  All done in Blender with a little "film grain" noise added in Blender.

I really like that you captured that green tint that the ship sometimes had.

Thank you, Chris!  It is one of the Blender Color Management choices (actually, about three choices to get to this result, plus gamma and exposure settings).  I appreciate the kind words!

There was a shot similar to this in the opening credits of The Cage, but it was shot with the three foot model.  This is to see what it might have looked like with the 11 foot model.  All done in Blender 3D, of course.

Yeah, I've always loved the original shot.  It was reused in the titles for the Animated Series too!

Not feeling so great, but the last night of call. So, I thought I'd make this image with my latest Enterprise, imaging if the pilot The Cage was shot in HD ... back in the day.

He could definitely model a bridge and put it in there, make some people and put them in there. The question is whether it's worth the effort. Of course, the other thing would just be to fake it in post like they did originally. ;)

Yeah, this is the Pike Enterprise and didn't have a detailed shuttle bay, yet.

I need to do the WNMHGB version next.  And I really should learn version 2.8, I guess.

2.8 will feel familiar rite quick
and you can make the UI ver 2.7 like.

If you really feel the need to. 2.79b still has a lot going for it.
