Title: SciFiEric's 2nd Pilot Enterprise
Post by: scifieric on Jun 24, 2020, 01:05 am
I'm now getting SOME free time.  I'm still pretty tired, but I've started yet another insane project.  The USS Enterprise from Where No Man Has Gone Before, the second Star Trek pilot ship.

It's just a start.

That looks great so far, Eric. I've always been a fan of this version of the ship. I especially like the nacelle end caps and the spikes on the bussards.

Thank you, my friend!

Me too.  I'm already itching to do the cutouts at the back end of the warp engines.  I've re-spun the lower saucer and I've got to re-cut the windows.  I'll be adding "rooms" to this.  But don't get too excited.  Like my prior projects, the goal is to look like the 11 foot model.  :D

Getting there ... slowly.  Fairly happy so far.  The good Mr. Gary Kerr helped me by answering a few of my questions and provided some information in addition.  I want my model to reflect the original as it was at the time, not necessarily as to what remained visible after all the photo-chemical processing.

It's been a while since I've been this excited to be working on a model!

It's looking outstanding, Eric. Your relentless pursuit of that perfect model as it was in the 1960s is always commendable. I don't have that kind of patience. ;)

And yet you accomplish things that I don't.  Thank you, Chris.  I really appreciate your kind words.  I suppose we each have our own unique goals.  I wish to have a passable version of each of the 11 foot (and 3 foot) versions of the model as used in the series.  Maybe one day ...

I absolutely HAD to do the back end of the Warp Engines.  I've been wanting to do that for YEARS!  I hope I did it justice.

Now, on to the rest.  (Maybe I'll do the Impulse Engines next ...)

I really wanted to see what a couple of renders from similar camera angles found in Where No Man Has Gone Before.

Slight, but definite progress.  I hope to cut saucer windows tomorrow.  These are (of course) just tools positioned to be the Booleans for the windows.

If I might make a small suggestion... see if you can borrow Tallguy's energy barrier. That is the one I've used with my models.

The different Filmic render settings drive me nuts.  That you can take the same model and the same lighting and turn out completely different-looking images amazes me.  I also am flabbergasted that there is no allowance for Filmic Color Management in the new version of Blender.  Nutty.

All done in Blender 3D, of course.  The last image shows how that side shot was set up.

I think someone else made the barrier image that went with Bill's ship.  Man, those renders of his looked like pristine frames cut from the original series.

I figured you would, since I used the tongue out smiley and all. ;)

There are times where I think about giving Blender another go and taking a crack at your Enterprise tutorial. But then I think about the time it takes to learn new software and how I can actually go into Lightwave and model (and texture) something. Plus, Blender's recent revamp and UI change hasn't warmed me up to the software any, though I could just use an older version. But, the work done by you and Dean and some of the other talented people here and at SFM is definitely an inspiration and a testament to how good Blender is. So, I can certainly see why you put on there "made in Blender," it not only keeps that question from popping up, but also lets people know the great stuff you can make in that software.

Believe it or not, there is another consideration.  I know it is obvious to you and me and probably everyone else here, but I kept getting requests for quotes on how much it would take to make another ship model ... but they meant physical.  They didn't realize that it was a 3D object.

Weird, I know.  But it's been happening with greater frequency!

Thank you, Dean.  Actually, I have some fake film grain on there.  I think it comes across fairly subtle on a render this size.  I'll probably do the "real" film grain with Blender when I'm done with the model.

I would like to have done something more substantial today, but I have a BLISTERING headache.

I found something I have to correct.  At the rear of the Engineering Hull during the first pilot, there are two rectangular windows with a round port BEHIND them, towards the shuttle bay.  By the second pilot, that round port was in FRONT of the two rectangular windows.

I still have to work on the triangles under the saucer.  After researching a bit, it doesn't seem like the "bumpers" were there yet.  I guess that was just a Production detail.

I still need to add the lettering on the grey squares under the saucer section.

I think I will make the warp domes a little more deep red.

Of course, this is still very much a work-in-progress.  Once I finish on cleaning up some of the details (like that round port aft Engineering) then I'll start on the textures.  But that's going to have to wait until my head feels better.

Thank you for looking in.

All done in Blender 3D.

And I always did like that shot of the Enterprise coming over Delta Vega at the end of Where No Man Has Gone Before.  This is a little closer and lighter, of course.

I need more trial and error on this in Blender.  The "film grain" didn't turn out how I wanted.  I may have to go back to using Photoshop for this.

I corrected the rear lights on the Engineering hull.  I've got both sides of the ship lit.  These are all for fun.

I still have to work on the "triangles" on the underside of the saucer.  Then I'll work on the textures.

Next week may be a little rough.  There may be no more updates until the week after.

Yeah, some. Thanks. We've got inventory coming up next week, so I put in some extra hours earlier this week and I'm still tired from that. I'll catch up on some rest this weekend. I just have to work tonight then I have two nights off. Aside from getting some sleep, I've really got the itch to do some CGI this weekend, especially since I've been too tired to do any of that stuff since Sunday.

Even though it is still a great image, there is something that seems off that I can't put my finger on.  Like the rim of the saucer looks too smooth and washed out.  Also, the lettering in the title seems to have depth to it with the highlights on it coming from the upper left and shadows on the lower right.

You are correct on both counts.  Oddly, no one ever seems to have noticed that the lettering from the original series was made a faux kind of 3D to help it stand out a little.

I've attached the original and you can see the edges on the top and left, and you can see shadows on the right and bottom of the letters.

I still have to make proper textures. but I do so love making images with these models.  I know I need to wait, but still.  LOL!

Well, now that you attached the original, I can definitely tell that the lighting is off. I never noticed the 3D thing with the text either.

Yeah, I'm a lunatic for trying to notice the tiny details.  I know I get some wrong, but I try!

Thanks for your help and encouragement!

Son of a gun.  Never noticed the lettering when viewing the original series.  Now that is attention to detail.  It's those little things that help sell a scene.

I was tired and listless today, but I still wanted to have some fun.  So, here are some more of the new model from various angles, but with some chromic aberration and distortion, along with some simulated film grain and blur.  Like I said, just for fun.  All done in Blender 3D.

Had a little fun this morning.  I don't think I got it quite right, and of course, the 2nd Pilot ship was never shot from this angle, but again, just for fun.  All done in Blender 3D, of course.  A little post work in Photoshop.

Working on this sequence for real.  Trying to make it look as much like the original as I can.

I've gone back and reimaged my sequence.  I wanted the lights in the ship's windows to show a little better.

I've always wanted to make this sequence and do it with some justice to the original.  In other words, I hope I'm close.

When I splice it into the correct spot and render it all out as a movie in the original episode, it gets all jittery.  I need to fix that.   Once I've got that fixed, I'll show the short movie.

Thanks for looking in!

The windows definitely look better. That's weird about it getting jittery. Is it a framerate issue?

It might be, but I tried to match the original 29.9 fps.  I've got to look at the HD frame rate.  Perhaps they dropped it.

This is still jittery, but it is my attempt at animating the effects for the title sequence for Where No Man Has Gone Before.  At least you can get the idea.

I've discovered another couple of slight differences. I think that either my selected camera is wrong, or I've chosen the wrong lens settings. Plus, the blinking lights on the underside of my saucer are slightly too large.

I've started comparing my renders to images of the original model as it was filmed in front of a blue screen. So, maybe I can tweak my model and my renderings a little closer to the original.

This first image is from The Roddenberry Vault.

It looks a bit blurry to me. But then, that may be your intent as you're trying to capture that 60s look.

That is exactly correct!  That's what I'm tryi8ng to do.

I am trying make the Blu-ray level of resolution play smoothly.  So, I"m trying to render it all out at full 2 Mega Pixel resolution, then cut the size or the ratio down to 4:3.

I would love to have my footage look like the original ... only without some of the mistakes.  No stars traveling through the ship mattes.  Stars moving a little better.  In any case, the goal is a personal one and will probably never get where I want it to be.  But that hardly matters.  If I can get it to look fairly good, then I'll be happy.

that is the paradox effect.

Both my grandparents on my mom's side suffered from dementia in their old age. that scares me because well it's very likely I will too as it was maternal side.

my hope is that I never notice it.

I hope some things remind and Sparc the memories back.  but hey may its an excuse to go on a old movie bender
