So, I watched the extended cut of TNG "The Measure of a Man." I never knew this cut existed. When I initially got my TNG Blu-Rays, I blazed through the first season, then stopped right before that episode. So, since I was watching it, I decided to watch that version. It was the original cut of the episode, which was too long for airing with commercials (57 minutes.) Usually, cuts like that aren't kept, but Melinda M. Snodgrass, the episode's writer, was given a copy on VHS, which she loaned to the people doing the Blu-Ray to use in reconstructing that cut of the episode. Anyway, it has a lot more character moments, including more explanation of Data's possible sentience, a scene reinforcing his and Geordi's friendship and a scene showing how much of a dick Commander Maddox really is. It's got a lot more than that, but those were some of the highlights. Much of that stuff was cut due to time as it wasn't necessary to the core of the episode. (which really is one of the best TNG episodes)

One of the more interesting bits (to me) is a discussion between Picard and Admiral Nakamura after they beam aboard the Enterprise. They're discussing how long it's been since they last saw each other, and Nakamura reminisces that it was right after Ensign Picard was assigned to the "old Reliant." Nakamura was a lieutenant then who hated surprise inspections by admirals. (he likes them better as an admiral) The name drop Reliant is the interesting part to me. Had that been left in, there would have been canon evidence that at least a second ship named Reliant was built after Star Trek II. And, calling it the "old" Reliant hints that there may even be a newer Reliant. Anyway, I found that an interesting name drop, obviously put in the episode by Snodgrass as a call back to the ship from ST2.

I heard there was a few extended cut of episodes that was never aired at full length, I did not know the Blu-ray collection had them.
I might have to pick that up.

As the for the Reliant, well it not unheard off, for navy's in the real world to reuse ships names.
A prime example would be the Enterprise. But you also got the HMS Campbeltown. The Original was given to the Royal Navy has part of 50 destroyers to help with the Second World War effort by the US before they had entered the war.
She was later used in The St Nazaire Raid where she was destroyed. You can read about the original ship here.
In 1989 a Second HMS Campbeltown was commission and Decommissioned in 2011. Rumour had it the name will be used again in the next generation of frigate.

So it would make sence for Starfleet to do it as well.
And to back this up, there have been three version off The USS Defiant seen in Trek. A Connie Class seen in TOS and two Defiant Class seen in DS9.

Well, we know Starfleet reuses ship names too. The Defiant, Saratoga, Intrepid and Enterprise are four that immediately come to mind. It was just interesting that the Reliant was mentioned.

I know the US Navy has even gone as far as to have ships of the same name in service simultaneously.

The Measure of a Man is the only episode I've found so far with an extended cut on the Blu-Rays. They were only able to reconstruct the episode due to Melinda M. Snodgrass having a VHS copy to use as a guide. It's an even better episode with the extra and extended scenes.

Prime_8

wow, the only copy left was on a VHS. lol

Yeah, of the completed episode. They likely still had the masters with the rest of the filmed footage. When they were doing the Blu-Ray project, they had to re-scan the masters and put the episodes back together. They re-composited effects shots, and replaced what needed replaced. In most cases, they were able to use original filmed assets. However, some stuff (like the planets and crystalline entity) were early CGI and needed to be completely replaced. They also had to redo a few of the ship shots as they were missing some of those. They also did some other stuff just because they could, like added window lights to the 2 foot Enterprise model used for forced perspective shots and warp transitions. It was really an ambitious project, but it worked because the series was filmed on 35mm film, so that it could be re-scanned at higher resolution later. They thought ahead with that show. The resulting episodes look like they should. Authentic, but higher detail.

Quote from: MadKoifish on Jul 28, 2019, 08:23 amthis post probably created 5 more drafts. . . . . .

The drafts are pissing me off too. When it saves the draft, it (sometimes) momentarily takes my cursor out of the text box. I'm usually in the middle of typing when it does this. It's really annoying.

The bad part is, there's a thing under your profile settings, Look and Layout, with a check box to automatically save drafts. I have that unchecked, and it still automatically saves them.

MadKoifish

Shockingly I only have one in the drafts since and it is one of those I typed it and though nah fuq it. Still attempting to nab that damned NOW LOADING thing as if you hover over any changeable thing in the forum it rolls out and rolls in fuking annoying as hell.

Worse is this soft does not retain everything on host like vanilla, it relies on precoded chinks and crap from go9oglapis so I cannot as a end user block scripts or alter things in a henpeck way. SFM has the damned drafts system too and if you leave a window open with a bit of typed stuff it'll keep pinging and uploading whatever is in that field. EG, using your BW.

scifidude79

Yeah, I've noticed that about SFM. It will even retain typed text across different devices. I don't like that.

oops the autosave is this one

I forget the autosave. and bugger I missed a good chance to block that loading bar. . . every time I am not waiting for it it sits there for ages. Anytime I am waiting for it it comes and goes in 1/8th a sec!

Well, another butt suck for this new "QUANTUM" bs firefox, cookies manager+ is one of those where the dev just quit. So now I have no cookie manager as all of them require this stupid containers tab so YET more annoying crap in the context menus and elsewhere as it loads all these stupid options for "container" tabs. Again diverging more types of browsing sessions vs just flat out disabling all the reasons they need private and not containers for all this other crap.
-_- sigh.

I am guessing they altered something so these "tools" need to run in these annoyances that now if I want them I have to go around and rip the crap I do not want that they use does not impact my daily use of the tool. I already find the private window/tab context menus etc annoying. It is like the stupid "take a screenshot" WHY when pcs have had print screen for the last 30 odd years.

Freak

You know what I hate about this time of year?
The Kids on my freaking modelling PC. I come home from work and want to do a little bit of work on my refit Connie before having to cook dinner. Only to find them sitting there playing Roblox with their freaking friends. I would kick them off if their friends where not round. Arrr

The other thing bugs the hell out me, is that I have told my son don't put Roblox on that computer as it slows it up.
I don't know what the hell it leaving behind, but every machine that it been on had to be rebuilt as it became to slow to use. I would remove the software and put a password on it so they can't use that machine. But the wife has over ruled me on it, as they need it for school. No they freaking don't 1, they are not in school until September and 2. They got their own laptops. But Roblox slowed them up so much they can't use it. Arrr... Drives me freaking nuts!

Just create your own account with admin and give the kids a restricted account. if your wife has issue with it make her pay for repairs or rebuild rates at a local repair shop. Kids need to learn responsibility and rules and consequences if their actions.
beyond being labled the poopoohead who craps on the kids fun. . . there is a deeper reason to not let them have admin access. It can ruin your life. If they install the oh so trendy game that SHOCK exposes your bank info or worse your identity you can find yourself responsible for hundreds of thousands in illegal loans, not to mention bank cards filled up with porn purchases and drained of assets.

Now this game likely is installing snoopware and crapware like updaters and trackers/lowlevel botnets. Just check the run and runonce areas of the registry and look at all startups and "services" Likely one of those areas or multiples will scoop up the crap that is slowing the pc.

Also more fodder, if it slows a system to a crawl it means it is using the gpu and cpu, which in the end is using power, and larger electric bills.

ATM most shops charge between 100~200usd for a reinstall and hdw check.

Final looking the game name up there is "ADULT" rooms and other issues surrounding it that make it not so kid friendly. Add in in game purchases. It is also targeted by trojans and other malicious installers. Most of which do as I mentioned above.

Unfortunately your kids and wife are not my own. All I can say is the dangers of a open admin pc in a hose where kids can do anything and a wife that is denying an adult in the house from as much control.

Freak

Rebuild and repairs are not the problem, I can do that myself.
As for bank details and the likes. I don't have it on a computer unless it one that never goes on the net, which I don't have so all paperwork and going into branches to sort banking stuff out. It safer that way, May not be convent but it safer.

It just that Fing game.

Three words: power on password. Unless it's on all the time, then just set the auto screen lock.

MadKoifish

No, the point is to drive home your time is important. So take your work out of the equation and let her see what that work is WORTH.

So you do not pay bills online? do not buy anything online? do not verify or do any payment cash moving online? if so that must be a struggle. I had to give that up in 2008.
