Title: The Same Old Thing
Post by: scifieric on Jan 15, 2022, 05:44 am
Well, it's the same old thing all over again ... except this time I'm using Charles Casimiro's plans which I have become convinced are more accurate than the other plans I was using.

I guess we'll see.  Just getting started, really.

Have you ever tried an original ship?    possibly in ST universe?

I did, a LONG time ago.  I never did like my own designs too much.  I wonder if I still have anything from when I was really young.  It was a spaceship that had the look of a submarine.  I figured that the design would work well, even in space, in order to protect the people on board.

Oh, that's very possible.  I've been a Star Trek fan for almost as long as I've been alive!  LOL!

Thanks buddy!

Making some progress.  I've still got to work on the cut-outs for the Engineering section windows, and then place "rooms" and lights on the entire ship.  But, getting closer ...

looking sweet man.

I wonder if rooms could be done with micro displacements somehow.

but probably not, I mean if you have to cut the hull to make the ports, then why not do it as a union and extrude in. hm suppose I answered my own 1/2 ass question.

Post by: scifieric on Feb 05, 2022, 04:36 am
Thank you, Scott!

That never occurred to me.  Hum.

And now I wish I'd have thought of the union and extruding inwards!  That's a great idea!  At least, I think it is!

I may experiment with that.

^ this is exactly how 1/2 of my blending goes .... will it work,, lets's have a burl.

the current one I and a bunch of others have been fighting for a while is getting blender to save thins with alpha to file.
it renders fin but drop almost all non-opaque things on save and the devs have been making excuses for over 5 years. even arguing we are not using it rite ( kinda Apple style)

My friend, I presume you'll make anything work when you apply your mind to it.  I absolutely have faith in you.

Well, later on, after all the textures have been applied, this will probably look better and closer to the original.  But for now, it's just fun!

My friend, you are VERY kind!  I GREATLY appreciate your kind words.

I'll create a flyby when I've got my textures on the model.  I'm hoping to do that next weekend.  I'm on call this week, so I figure I'll be fairly busy.

Did a little more work today.  It might not show as readily apparent, but I'm happy with the progress so far.  I am itching to start making textures!

I have noticed that when I compare the plans to some screen captures, the little side green light is too large. It was there during the series, but it was at least half the size, if not even smaller. I'll correct that soon.

I've always held Sinclair's to be the most accurate.  What has you leaning now towards these?

I remember I read from someone who studied the various plans who was accurate with what aspect of the ship.  The ones to use (if anyone can find them or get a copy) would be Gary Kerr's plans.  He had actual access to the original model on more than one occasion!

Basically, I just wanted to try another set of plans this time.

It has been a really, REALLY long time since I've played with textures.  I've got a long way to go, but this is a start.

I have an idea to try.  A mixture of the old USS Enterprise model shape/configuration and the new texturing style from the new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds television show.  I'll give that a try when I'm a little more up to speed.

I did not mean that the above picture was an attempt at the new style yet.  I want to do one classic USS Enterprise first, then if I can do it, I'll try a newer version.

Looking really good as always!  Maybe it is the contrast with the rest of the ship not yet addressed but it looks extra green*.

*Must think in Russi... err... Scottish

LOL!  Yeah, I noticed.  I'm keeping versions of the textures for further manipulation.  I believe that this is pretty much what the model looked like.  I may have to change it to look more like the end result of the special effects.

Excellent observation and thank you for telling me!

And nice to see you around!  It's been a while!

It has been awhile.  I try to pop in as often as I can these days.

Coming along nicely!  You know you really should go for the interior sometime.  You can start with just the areas that have portholes and go from there.

I am EXTREMELY pleased to see you here!  I was on your site the other day to see what was going on.  (The other day?  A few weeks ago is probably more accurate.)  Your work is always fantastic and a joy to see.

I actually was thinking about that!  I will do that.  I'll be on call for the next week, so I'll be pretty busy until NEXT Monday, but I'll probably give this a go at that time.  I'd love to see something like that one one of my models.

Thank you!
